Synopsis:

The narrative unfolds in modern-day Tokyo, focusing on Rei Kiriyama, a withdrawn shogi prodigy grappling with profound loneliness following a difficult childhood. Haunted by past trauma and struggling to connect with others, Rei finds solace in the rhythmic precision of the game. The series explores his attempts to rebuild relationships and find a sense of belonging through interactions with his new peers at a shared apartment.

Visually, the anime employs a gentle, introspective style that reflects Rei's emotional state. It delves into themes of isolation, healing, and the complexities of human connection, portraying the quiet moments of everyday life with thoughtful detail. The story isn’t driven by grand conflicts but rather by the subtle shifts in Rei's internal world as he navigates the challenges of forging meaningful relationships and confronting his personal demons.

There's really not much to say. If you liked 3-gatsu no Lion (March Comes in like a Lion) and you liked the music to the first opening, you'll probably like this. If you like the song but not the show, (or have no opinion on it) you might still like the extended song, although the imagery won't have any impact. If you don't like either, this isn't for you. For a 5 minute music video, it manages to capture so well what makes the show so great. The imagery is all very evocative, most of it is new, some reused, but it all fits sowell. I think my only big complaint is how much it seems to push the HinaxRei ship, which while that's kinda there in the series, it's not as much a focus as this would have you believe. But otherwise, for a 5 minute music video, it's great.
