Synopsis:

In the year 2088, humanity exists as something other than itself. This film presents a dystopian vision where individuals have become the "Guilstein"— beings possessing human form but devoid of souls. The narrative follows the unsettling consequences of this transformation, exploring themes of identity and what constitutes life. Visually striking with its fully digital 3D animation, the story unfolds in a world steeped in a palpable sense of unease. Character designs, reminiscent of detailed creature artistry, contribute to a uniquely unsettling aesthetic. Rooted in a manga by Tamaki Hisao, and with script supervision from Monkey Punch, this action-horror film delivers a thought-provoking exploration of existence within a profoundly altered reality.

Seeing that this is a fairly old movie, I was surprised to see that no one else has reviewed it before. So, let me be the first! Guilstein is set in a post-apocalyptic world of sorts, where the rich leaders who live in luxury have resorted to experimenting on people to create bioweapons: monsters called Guilstein. Watching it reminded me of other old animated movies like Demon City Shinjuku and Vampire Hunter D—it has the same vibe. The animation combines CGI and 2D, which is often a tricky combo to pull off, especially in the early 2000s. In this movie, it only works for somescenes. It comes off a little wooden and disjointed in a lot of places, though it didn't completely ruin my whole experience. I enjoyed the monster designs, and they do pop with the cgi touch, so I can see why they went with that route. But again, it's not smooth enough. The plot is nothing revolutionary, pretty standard and predictable. We also don't get a lot of backstory on the world or why it operates the way it does. The characters aren't really developed either, and I didn't feel attached to any of them except the main male protagonist, Chaos. Overall, it's a little enjoyable thanks to the Guilsteins but ultimately forgettable. I still recommend that you give it a watch though, it just feels like one of those classics you can watch on a lazy Sunday.

A very average anime for its time starring a girl who goes on a mission to find her father and fights a bunch of CGI monsters. The story is very typical of that of a 1980s-2000s anime and there's nothing particularly exciting or new about this one either. The animation is appropriate for its time although it's CGI'd this didn't really bother me and the plot is quite basic and there isn't much character development at all. However, its an enjoyable 40 minutes and seeing the monsters fight each other is the best bit but other than that the anime itself is quite dim. Soif you want to kill some time this is somewhat worth it otherwise its reasonably forgettable.
