Synopsis:
In the aftermath of a mysterious event that has rendered Tokyo's Shinjuku district uninhabited by humans, a peculiar ecosystem has emerged. The story unfolds during a summer in the 21st century, where the cityscape is populated by bizarre, newly-evolved creatures – beings like Donyatsu, a curious fusion of feline and pastry, and Begaru, a similarly unusual blend of cat and bagel. The narrative follows individuals navigating this altered world, exploring the implications of humanity’s absence and the strange life that has taken its place. The anime offers a contemplative atmosphere, examining themes of adaptation, survival, and the unexpected consequences of unforeseen change within a surreal and unsettling environment. It presents a quiet exploration of existence in a world fundamentally reshaped.

Ok, to be fair this anime makes little sense if you didn't read the manga, and unfortunately it is in itself super short (each episode running for about two minutes with twelve episodes in total), which results in a story that doesn't make a lot of sense. So what is Donyatsu all about? A donut shaped cat awakes after a coma to find himself alone on the desolated streets of Tokyo: the humans and animals are nowhere in sight. Our donut shaped protagonist has no idea who he is or what is his name, luckily for him he encounters a bagel cat, along with severalother pastry shaped animals; all appear to suffer from amnesia. nnIt's pretty funny, and interesting as you see these oddballs trying their best to make sense of what the hell happened on earth, especially in light of the urban landscape being decorated with human skeletons at nearly every turn. nnDonyatsu does not rise any existential questions, nor does it try to get over your head, yet one thing is clear; there is something very dark lurking underneath the surface of this kiddy-like colourful anime. nnI do recommend you read the manga: it's so much better and actually makes sense. The anime is more of a supplement. -

What a wacky group this is! Post apocalyptic donut cats living where humans cease to exist! How can it be so BAD. Truly stinks! I bet the manga is very funny and cute, but this anime was junk. The animation is was very bad cgi (except for a very well animated mecha) and the movement feels very off and uncanny. The plot so random and feels like you’ve dropped into a conversation and walked away before it was done. Every episode is so disconnected and random, which can be fun- but not for this. I want substance, I want to know what made these creatures, whatdrives them!nnAlas, you won’t get any answers or satisfaction from this. Your child might find it funny and goofy, but honestly the violence and undertones make it inappropriate for the age group that I could see it appealing to. nnI’m going to go read the manga now and I bet I’ll love it.
