The Ootsuji Detective Agency, struggling for relevance, finds itself embroiled in a series of unsettling disappearances during the city’s annual festival. Hired by a concerned newspaperman, young detective Soutarou is tasked with uncovering the truth behind these vanishings, a path that leads him into the Dark – a sprawling, lawless underworld mirroring the city above. Initially delegating the investigation to his impetuous partner, Saki, Soutarou soon discovers he’s deeply entangled in a dangerous situation when Saki also vanishes.

Forced to follow, Soutarou must navigate the Dark's treacherous landscape and confront its peculiar inhabitants. He encounters factions like the menacing Laughing Masks gang and a rogue police unit operating a heavily armed armored train, all while searching for his missing companion and unraveling the mysteries that bind the city’s surface world to its hidden depths. The series explores themes of responsibility, the blurred lines between justice and lawlessness, and the consequences of seeking answers in places best left unexplored.
