Synopsis:
Set against a backdrop of late 20th-century technological unease, this OVA explores themes of betrayal, obsession, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. The narrative centers on the fractured relationship between a brilliant but deranged scientist and the woman who shattered his trust. Driven to extremes by heartbreak, he subjects her to radical cybernetic enhancements, transforming her into a being designed solely for physical gratification. However, even within this artificial existence, her capacity for deceit persists. The story follows the scientist's son as he embarks on a journey to confront his mother’s altered form and ultimately seek retribution for his father’s pain and the violation of her being. The anime presents a darkly unsettling atmosphere, delving into complex questions about identity and the boundaries of humanity.

I don't think I've ever been more conflicted on anything like I have with Alice. There is genuinely a lot to enjoy here, especially for fans of Monkey Punch. And to be perfectly honest, unless you are a fan of Monkey Punch's work, I don't see much value in watching it. Even if you're coming in from the Lupin anime and want to see more, I still wouldn't recommend it unless you've read the Lupin manga. The manga is way more explicit than the anime ever got, and Alice is very much like the manga; it does not hold back. In general, I get uncomfortablewatching sex scenes, but with just how gratuitous it is, it makes it very hard to watch at times, and the creepy misogynistic nature of the whole OVA. If this had better writing and gave Alice more humanity, there could be something interesting done with that, it could have explored her more as a character instead of literally just making her a sex object. nnOn the other hand, though, the art style really captures Monkey Punch's style so well, and with how it's been butchered so much over the years, I really appreciate the attention to detail with how characters are drawn. Personally, I love Monkey Punch's art style, so this gave the OVA massive points. And also, aside from some poor writing, the comedy is really good. There is a lot of fun slapstick and great jokes, to the point where I can suck it up and watch this again for what I enjoy about it.nnSo, if you plan to go through Monkey Punch's entire series of works, sure, check this out, be warned, but I think there's enough here for hardcore fans to genuinely enjoy. If you're not a Monkey Punch fan, even a fan of just Lupin, don't, just don't. As good as the art and jokes can be, the bad is just too bad.
