Synopsis:
On a secluded island, three uniquely intelligent creatures—Rikotto, Zuzu, and Paroru—live with a deep-seated caution regarding the world beyond their shores. Driven by curiosity about the strange artifacts that occasionally drift ashore, Rikotto and Zuzu embark on a journey to explore this unknown world, persuading the hesitant Paroru to join them. Their initial wonder at a vibrant human city soon gives way to apprehension as they become targets of a traveling circus.
The narrative explores themes of courage in the face of fear and the bonds of friendship tested by unfamiliar circumstances. As Rikotto and Zuzu face confinement and potential exploitation, Paroru must confront his own anxieties and determine the extent of his loyalty to his companions. The series presents a gentle exploration of cultural differences and personal growth within a visually engaging setting.

So, first, the description of the anime is wrong. Paroru is not the one, who wants to see the fireworks. It’s rikotto. Paroru is actually literally afraid of anything and respects the rules of their island very much. Zazu is a collector, but he never thought about leaving the island. Rikotto on the other hand is very adventurous and as soon as she sees the photo with the fireworks, she immediately makes the decision to go and see them (because she loves all shiny things). Overall, I find the story really cute and a nice cartoon for kids. The species looks very nice and i actually wouldlove to see more of them. The island as well looks pretty comfortable and the art is amazing. nnWhat I also love about this short film, is that it doesn’t really have a specific moral. You can interpret so many things into it and in the end, it’s still subjective. There are so many morals I thought about after watching it and I think each of it works pretty fine, although some of them are rather dark.nnTho, I’d still recommend it to anyone, who’d like to smile after a stressful day. :)nnMy score: 9/10 -

For newer anime fans, I think watching this short will open your eyes as to what is possible in the medium of animation. This anime project put Yochimichi Kameda on the map as one of the most talented up and coming animators in the industry. Paroru has the charm of a Ghibli movie, but with linework evocative of brushstrokes a la Takeshi Koike or Takahata’s Tale of Princess Kaguya (though not quite as painterly and more frenetic than the later). I was blown away by how stylish and fluid the animation was, despite having such complex, unique character designs. Even background movement like the legswalking in the background of a scene in a busy city are lovingly animated with the attention of a main character. nnIf you are a sakuga enthusiast then you probably already know about Kameda’s work, but if you haven’t seen this early animation direction by him, I highly recommend seeking it out. As for the narrative itself, don’t expect anything more than a simple adventure, but sometimes that’s all you need to have a good time.
