Synopsis:

Delve into the unsettling world of *Yami Shibai*, a chilling anthology series that presents traditional Japanese ghost stories through a unique visual style. Each episode unfolds like a theatrical performance using shadow puppetry, creating an atmosphere of suspense and unease. The narratives explore folklore, urban legends, and historical tales, often focusing on human anxieties and the lingering impact of past events. Characters are rendered with stark simplicity, yet their emotional journeys resonate deeply within the shadowy landscapes. *Yami Shibai* doesn't rely on jump scares, but rather cultivates a pervasive sense of dread and psychological discomfort, inviting viewers to contemplate the darkness that can reside within stories and ourselves. It’s an experience more about atmosphere than action, prioritizing mood and narrative ambiguity over straightforward explanations.

I'm surprised I'll be the first to leave a review here. Well, this is Yami Shibai, the 12th season. For the genre it presents, I think it holds up quite well. From the presentation or animation, if I should even call it that (it’s a play, or a theater story or something), to the content and finally to the duration of the episodes (4 minutes each); everything does well to send chills down my spine, that is, do what it’s supposed to do. After stumbling upon this season and easily finishing it in no time, I went down the spiral of looking for more like it.Which is why I look favorably on this season, because in comparison to the others I saw, this one stands as the creepiest. Kagewani for example, the first episode is too long, with unnecessary lengthy conversations and chasing scenes such that horror appeal was easily lost. In any case, I recommend Yami Shibai for an easy chill down one’s spine. But if you’re looking for something to knock you off your socks or make you pee your pants, this is not it. I’d describe it as a set of stories you’d tell to get to scare a kid, but still have them go into their room by themselves in the dark.nnI personally enjoyed the highly short season, and I plan on conquering the rest of the series seasons. I hope this review helps.

I've watched all the previous seasons of this show, and overall, it's been a decent way to pass the time. However, I have to say that nothing quite compares to the earlier seasons. Those initial episodes inflicted a certain fear, with well-crafted stories that did scared me sometimes ^^. In contrast, the later seasons feel quite disjointed. The narrative often lacks coherence, and the morals or underlying messages are not always clear. This shift has made it harder to stay invested. Additionally, the thrill and suspense that once made my heart race are now gone. Season 12 shows some improvement. There are moments where the story becomeso weird, I love it.nnOverall, while the anime remains a pleasant distraction, it no longer evokes the same fear and spine chill as it once did.nI still have huge hope for season 13th !
